Starting your own Keepsake Business
We are delighted to introduce you to a fabulous young mum, Gemma, who has recently decided to “seize the moment”! This is Gemma’s first blog, about starting your own keepsake business and how her decision came to be. We will hear more from Gemma over the next few months, as we continue to follow ever step her incredible and exciting journey.
Hi, my name is Gem. I am 32 years old and I live with my husband and 2 children in a village near Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
My husband and I moved to Yorkshire in 2003 hoping to start a life for ourselves. We both had dreams of running our own businesses, something we could never have afforded to do in our hometown of Southend-on-Sea where property is extremely expensive. My dad helped us buy a house in Yorkshire, and we moved in just in time for Christmas. I already had a small business selling body jewellery online via my own website, but it didn’t earn enough to pay the bills and we needed to get jobs in order to get a mortgage. That is pretty much where the dream ended….until now!
What happened next…?
Once we had jobs and felt comfortable, it became very hard to give up the security of a regular income. Then came the pitter patter of two tiny feet, not long followed by 2 more tiny feet and financial security became even more important. I went back to work part-time as a breastfeeding peer supporter and my husband continued his job with the Yorkshire Ambulance service. I loved my job and worked my way up to become a mentor and staff trainer, plus it was flexible shifts so if worked perfectly for us.
Unfortunately though, due to lack of funding my post was recently made redundant. I was given the option to go back to peer support, which I very nearly did…..then something quite amazing happened!
The moment of Inspiration!
I saw an advert on my Facebook page inviting me to join the ‘Baby proof your income challenge’ and I thought to myself, “what if I could build up my business and be self-employed full-time?” Then I wouldn’t have to worry about finding another job that would fit around the school run and my husband’s shifts. I decided that it was now or never, if I didn’t accept redundancy I might never give up working for someone else.
So I started on the challenge with the intention of finding a way to build my existing business. Each day Victoria would set a task which would help us to get a clearer idea of what we wanted to and how we were going to get there. It became clearer and clearer in my mind that as much as I enjoyed running my body jewellery website I really wanted to carry on working with mums and babies. I have loved this part of the breastfeeding support role, helping mothers make the memories that they could cherish for the rest of their lives…then it dawned on me. KEEPSAKES! Not only would this be my perfect business, combining my interest in jewellery with my love of working with new mums but it just so happened to be something that Victoria specialised in and could help me with. I started making enquiries and discussing options with Victoria and finally I decided to enrol in training with the Keepsake Academy. I am going to do most of my training online to keep travelling costs down, but I am confident that after almost 10 years living in Yorkshire I am finally going to be able to do what I came here for!
My goal is to build up a business that I can run from home, choose my own hours and have complete control over. My dream is to have enough free time to enjoy my family, especially while our children are young and always be there when they need me.
We wish Gemma every success for the future and we look forward to her next blog post.
