Why do you need to protect your working time? Women are great at multitasking – especially when they work from home. It’s really easy to get into the habit of alternating the housework with our business-related activities… but is this really a good habit to get into?
Multitasking can actually lead us into problems. We often get into the habit of making those housework chores AS important as our work … and end up depleting our energy AND our available time on non-essential activities.
Protect your working time
Time is your biggest resource. It’s valuable and non-renewable – so once it’s gone, it’s gone for good – so you NEED to protect your time. You have to gain an element of control around your working hours AND build a routine that’s suitable for you, in order to make your creative business a success. So how can you do that?
You can’t do everything on your own – especially if you’re juggling motherhood with housework and running a business. Whether you hire someone to help you clean your house, get help with scheduling your online social media posts, or enlist the help of your partner or parents to take the little ones off your hands for a couple of hours, get in outside help.
Make scheduling your best friend
Decide what hours and days you want to work. It’s easy for work-at-home mums to end up working longer than average hours, as we try to intermingle home and work chores. But this is a false economy, as you’ll end up working for longer, but achieving even less in your business.
Start to schedule in your regular activities – including checking your social media and emails. Now you can go through and block off chunks of time to complete those things on your ‘to do’ list. By breaking down your activities into chunks, you’ll avoid overwhelm and ensure you stay focused on the task at hand.
Learn to dedicate your time and focus on the task at hand. Whether you’re working on your creative business or spending time with your family, get into the habit of giving that particular task ALL of your attention.
We can become so used to being available 24-7, but if you want to increase your creativity, motivation and productivity, get dedicated. Turn off your phone and switch off notifications for email and social media. This will help you dedicate QUALITY time to the task, rather than trying to juggle your focus and time – and both your business AND your family will flourish as a result.
Your time is precious to you – and if you want your business to grow, you need to dedicate your working hours to your business. By sectioning off your time, you’ll ensure each area of your life gets the quality and focus it deserves. But you’ll also lose some of the guilt you may feel too, around spending time away from your business and/or your family… as you’ll be giving them your all when you DO spend time on them.
